hagel's nomination for defense secretary topped today's sunday talks. >> overall temperment and is he suited to run a department or big agency like the pentagon. >> whether he really believes that the surge was the worst blunderer since the vietnam war, that clearly is not -- that is not correct. in fact, it is bizarre. why would he oppose calling the iranian revolutionary guard a terrorist organization? >> peter alexander is at the white house where that nomination was announced. good afternoon to you. what is the president's strategy for dealing with these sorts of road blocks from republicans ahead of hagel's hearing? >> reporter: it is clear that the administration, the white house, specifically stands behind chuck hagel and is waiting for hearings to take place and they say it is only at that time that they will see exactly how chuck hagel will react to pushback. colin powell referred to hagel as having a diminished public record. he will be as secretary of defense the first grunt as it were ever to serve as secretary of defense and powell said because he put his own life at risk

, too, andrea, over the weekend while colin powell was out talking about a defense of hagel for a cabinet post, senator corker was appearing elsewhere and giving a different type of interpretation. take a listen. >> i think another thing, george is going to come up is just his overall temperament. and is he suited to run a department or a big agency or a big entity like the pentagon. >> andrea, has senator corker's office or those around him explained what he was getting at there by the temperament phrasing? >> well, in fact, this has sort of lit up the e-mailing and texting around town here because the pro-hagel group, the people supporting him, former staff members, are asking, you know, what was he talking about because he did not get along well with some of his republican colleagues, he's known to have sort of sharp elbows but he's hardly the only senator who is known to be a little prickly at times. so people really don't understand is this a new -- was senator corker previewing a new line of attack against the hagel nomination where they're going to try to get to his t

of youth juvenile justice organizations. it seems to eliminate what the children's defense fund calls the cradle to prison pipeline and replace it with a cradle to college and career pipeline by investing in children. every time you do that using evidence-based approaches, you significantly reduce crime and save more money than you spend. the fact of the matter is, my friend at the university of virginia frequently mentions. if your school shooting prevention program begins when the shooter is at the door, it's too late. now, you have to reduce violence generally, you have to talk about the mental health. and if you've got a troubled child that's trying to mass an arsenal of weapons to shoot somebody, you've got to intervene before they show up at the door. i mean, there's a lot that we can do that can protect our children. and we shouldn't be focused on just one. i support the assault weapons ban. i don't think -- i supported it when it came in 20 years ago. i opposed the expiration that should have been continued. that's just one, the magazines, mental health, and prevention. >> con

will support his nomination as secretary of defense. it seems like the frost is melting, but there's still the frost from the right. >> well, there is. i think we'll see some contentious hearings. we heard some hints over the weekend that republicans will bring out former staffers, former aides who have clashed with hagel in the past. senator bob kosher in tennessee said that i think on cbs' sunday show, so no smooth sailing by any means, but at the end of the day, having schumer on board is a big deal, having boxer on board is a big deal. and with 5 of them, we'll see whether or not republicans really want to use their political capital in trying to filibuster a nominee, especially one by the way, who will have so much support from outside groups like veterans associations. >> there'sing so much talk about how there is frost between the left and right. i want to get your take on this. this was a statement made by the president yesterday at the last press conference of his first administration. it was about the aloofness perception that seems to get out there around him and his inner circl

with democrats and rand paul cooperating on some national defense issues, cutting military spending, some spying issues that we care about. you'll see paul ryan making a big show out of not cooperating with democrats but always voting yes as he did for the fiscal cliff deal and as he has in many times previous so it's going to be opportunistic between them, but they haven't sorted it out, this civil war between themselves and so it makes it very difficult for a single figure to rally under the republican mantle. >> ari, to you, to whatever matt is saying and add to whatever you would like to to the conversation here. we saw tea partiers rebel back in 2010 because they did not see the fiscal conservatism that they believe that the republican party should -- should have in its platform. might you see those centrists, those moderate republicans saying, hey, we're going to lead the republican party and start our own, if you will, subgroup because right now the republican party doesn't represent what we want it to be. >> i don't see that kind of splintering, but i would echo things like rubio and pot

's a legitimate topic that should be under discussion. i think there is a lot of room in the defense budget for cuts, but our primary focus in terms of the economy should be job creation. so that means that the government has to spend in order to create economic stability. economic progress. we need jobs in this economy for middle class people and that's what will make this economy stronger and so if we cut then we're going against that very basic economic principle. when you constrict the budget and cut off the flow of money, you're not going have as many jobs available. so i am not -- i am not in favor of drastic cuts in spending at this time, but i do think long term we should be looking at reducing our debt and restoring fiscal sanity to our budget. >> a group of house democrats, yourself included you want to do away with the debt ceiling law altogether. this is congressman jerry neven, this is what he had to say about it. take a listen. >> it is time to repeal the debt ceiling and today we're introducing legislation to do just that. instead of playing a game of chicken with the full fa

of defense. >> and you said that chuck hagel brings up the next topic, the conservative group america future fund, and they have produced a tv spot blasting chuck hagel and his supporter senator chuck schumer that is going to air on cable outlets and this is a look at a it and the left is not happy with hagel either and they have a use your mandate saying that he is a bad choice for women and gays and support for israel. what is chuck hagel's confirmation hearing going to look like? >> this is going to be the opportunity for republicans who were obviously unhappy with the president's re-election and the fact that they are the senate minority and to throw everything they have plus the kitchen sink. my forecast is that and chuck schumer says i'm comfortable with this guy, the support from the left, regarding israel and otherwise really kind of has to be dialed back, because schumer is no pushover when it comes to those issues and that is true regarding the gender and gay issues as well, so, yes sh, he going to be kind of an easy mark in some fashion, because the republicans resented the fact t
